The player is the main protagonist of the MADNESS: Project Nexus Arena Mode. The player does not specialize in any specific form of combat, unless specified otherwise in an Origin Description. They're also the first grunt to be fired out of the cannon during Marsh-Mellow-Madness.

Their magiturge origin is the protagonist of MADNESS: Project Nexus Summer Update; THE MAGITURGE and an earlier version of their disquieted one origin is the protagonist of The masked man and Masked Man III.

Appearance

There are 10 different Origins, which can affect both the player's gameplay and appearance, but this can be altered at any time by equipping or unequipping armor (The only exceptions being The Disquieted's Mask and Project Creber's Replication Rig, which are unique as they cannot be unequipped). Armor can also be altered using the colorizer to change colors and/or textures. Once the Loft is unlocked in the HQ, the player's skin and blood color can be altered as well.

Personality

The player is a somewhat arrogant and confident individual, while also described as "cranky" by Bossman. They are also shown to be ruthless and efficient in combat, and initially dismisses other characters such as the Chef and Crackpot until they reveal themselves to be potentially useful. On the other hand, they do seem to be fond of the people they work with, such as Bossman, who the player declares "deserves a medal", and Pilot Dave, who claims the player has been "Good to him and his lads" by the end of Arena Mode. Unlockable trophies in the Loft imply some information about them, such as not knowing who Hank or Stygian are and seemingly being a fan of Garret Goyle, drawing a small heart next to his name upon beating Slaughter Time.

It is possible that some aspects of their personality are dependent on the origin they have. For example, the Massive and Magiturge have very different tones in their respective voice lines.

Abilities

While starting out weak, and no better at fighting than a normal grunt, the player can very quickly learn to master any form of combat all in a very short amount of time. Depending on the origin chosen, they may also have an affinity for a certain type of weapon or special abilities unique to them. As the player progresses through Arena Mode, they become more and more dangerous, unlocking skills, armor, and weapons to use against enemies, as well as a group of up to five hirelings they can bring into battle.

When the player beats Arena Mode, they "imprint" and have to play through once again. Each successful imprint makes the player slightly stronger on their next run, as well as unlocking more origins.

A list of the skills of every specialization, with their description, effects, cost, prerequisites, and type can be found here.
